How Big Is GTA 6? PS5 File Size and Storage You Need
Short answer: there is no official number yet. Plan for roughly 150 to 200GB, and free up at least about 200GB on your PS5 to be safe.
Last updated: June 20, 2026
"How big is GTA 6?" is one of the most-asked questions ahead of launch, and the honest answer is that nobody outside Rockstar knows yet. As of June 20, 2026, Rockstar has not published any official install or file size for GTA 6 on PS5 or any other platform, and no size is listed on the PlayStation Store page. Until that changes, every number you see online is either an estimate or, in one famous case, a hoax.
This page does two things. First, it gives you a realistic planning estimate so you can clear enough space in advance instead of scrambling on launch night. Second, it debunks the viral 676.7GB figure that keeps resurfacing, so you do not buy more storage than you actually need.
How big will GTA 6 be?
The most useful way to estimate an unannounced install size is to look at what comparable games actually shipped at. The figures below are real, confirmed sizes for past Rockstar and AAA console titles, used here only as context for an estimate. They are not a stand-in for the GTA 6 number, which has not been announced.
| Game | Approx. console size | Status |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 5 | ~110GB | Confirmed (prior game) |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | ~150GB | Confirmed (prior game) |
| GTA 6 | ~150 to 200GB | Estimate only, not confirmed |
Rockstar's last two flagship releases landed at roughly 110GB (GTA 5) and roughly 150GB (Red Dead Redemption 2) on console. GTA 6 is a far larger next-gen open world built specifically for current hardware, so it is reasonable to expect it to sit at or above the top of that range. Our best estimate, clearly labeled as an estimate, is roughly 150 to 200GB on PS5.
Not confirmed
The most-cited leak, attributed to the "GTA 6 Intel" account, claims the game is "just under 200GB". We have no way to verify this and Rockstar has not confirmed it. Treat it as a rumor that happens to line up with the upper end of our precedent-based estimate, not as a fact.
One more caveat worth planning around: the size at launch and the size after the day-one patch are often different. Big releases frequently ship a large patch on or near launch day, which can push the real on-disk figure higher than the base download. For that reason we suggest treating about 200GB as a planning floor rather than a ceiling, even though the official figure could land lower.
Expect Rockstar to publish the real, confirmed install size as part of pre-launch marketing closer to the November 19, 2026 release date. We will update this page with the official number the moment it is announced.
The 676.7GB figure is a hoax
If you have seen claims that GTA 6 will be 676.7GB, ignore them. That number is a confirmed hoax. It originated from a fake Xbox Store screenshot that circulated in December 2025 and has since been debunked by multiple gaming outlets. There is no legitimate listing, from Rockstar, PlayStation, or Xbox, that has ever shown that size.
Beyond being fake, the figure does not even survive a sanity check. A stock PS5 ships with around 667GB of usable storage after the system software takes its share. A 676.7GB game would not physically fit on a base console, let alone leave room for the operating system, saves, or anything else. The number was designed to look shocking and go viral, not to be plausible.
Bottom line
676.7GB is fake. Plan around the realistic estimate of roughly 150 to 200GB instead, and do not let the hoax pressure you into buying far more storage than you need.
The SSD to buy
You do not need an SSD just to play GTA 6, since the PS5 already runs everything from its fast internal drive. You only need one if your console does not have enough free space for an install we expect to be large. If you are tight on room, adding an internal PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD that meets Sony's requirements is the standard fix, and a 2TB drive gives you comfortable headroom for GTA 6 plus the rest of your library.

Both of these are PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives in the capacity and speed class Sony recommends for PS5 expansion. A heatsink is required for PS5 installation; check that whichever model you order includes one or add a compatible heatsink separately.
Once your storage is sorted, the next step is being ready to install the moment the game unlocks. See our guide on when GTA 6 pre-load goes live so the download is done before launch night.
Frequently asked questions
How big is GTA 6 on PS5?
Rockstar has not published an official install size yet, so there is no confirmed number. Based on the size of recent open-world games, a realistic planning estimate is roughly 150-200GB on PS5. Treat about 200GB as a safe floor, because a day-one patch can push the final figure higher.
Is the 676.7GB GTA 6 file size real?
No. The 676.7GB figure that went viral came from a fake Xbox Store screenshot in December 2025 and has been debunked by multiple outlets. It is also physically implausible: a stock PS5 only has around 667GB of usable storage, so a single game could not occupy that much space and still install.
How much storage do I need for GTA 6 on PS5?
Until Rockstar confirms the size, plan to free up at least about 200GB. That covers the most-cited (unverified) estimate of just under 200GB plus headroom for a launch-day patch. If your console is already full, the simplest fix is adding an internal NVMe SSD.
Do I need an SSD for GTA 6?
The PS5 already runs every game from a fast internal SSD, so you do not strictly need one to play. You only need extra storage if your console does not have enough free space. A PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD that meets Sony's requirements is the standard way to expand a PS5.
