How Big Is GTA 6? PS5 File Size and Storage You Need

"How big is GTA 6?" is one of the most-asked questions of launch month. As of November 1, 2026, Rockstar still has not published an official install size for any platform. What changed on 27 October 2026 is that a 210GB PS5 download size surfaced from PlayStation Store data, and it is the most credible number so far.

This page does three things. It explains where the 210GB figure comes from and how much to trust it, it tells you how much space to clear so launch night is spent playing rather than deleting, and it debunks the viral 676.7GB figure that keeps resurfacing.

The 210GB figure is easier to judge next to what Rockstar's last two flagship games shipped at. GTA 6 is a far larger current generation open world, so landing well above both is what you would expect.

Rockstar's last two flagship releases landed at roughly 110GB (GTA 5) and roughly 150GB (Red Dead Redemption 2) on console, so a game whose map Rockstar describes as about twice the size of GTA 5's coming in around 210GB is plausible. It is also roughly a third of a launch PS5's usable space.

One more caveat worth planning around: the size at launch and the size after the day-one patch are often different. Big releases frequently ship a large patch on or near launch day, which can push the real on-disk figure higher than the base download. For that reason we suggest clearing about 230GB rather than exactly210GB.

The PlayStation Store normally shows the exact download size once pre-load opens on November 12. We will update this page with the confirmed number then.

No. In its pre-order announcement on June 24, 2026, Take-Two said the physical version of GTA 6 contains a download code inside the box, not the game on a disc. Boxed copies are available from November 12 so buyers can pre-load alongside digital customers.

In practice that means a boxed copy needs exactly the same free space and the same download as a digital one. If you were planning to buy physical to skip a 210GB download on a slow connection, it will not help. Redeem the code early and start the pre-load on November 12 instead.

If you have seen claims that GTA 6 will be 676.7GB, ignore them. That number is a confirmed hoax. It originated from a fake Xbox Store screenshot that circulated in December 2025 and has since been debunked by multiple gaming outlets. There is no legitimate listing, from Rockstar, PlayStation, or Xbox, that has ever shown that size.

Beyond being fake, the figure does not even survive a sanity check. A stock PS5 ships with around 667GB of usable storage after the system software takes its share. A 676.7GB game would not physically fit on a base console, let alone leave room for the operating system, saves, or anything else. The number was designed to look shocking and go viral, not to be plausible.

You do not need an SSD just to play GTA 6, since the PS5 already runs everything from its fast internal drive. You only need one if your console does not have enough free space for an install we expect to be large. If you are tight on room, adding an internal PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD that meets Sony's requirements is the standard fix, and a 2TB drive gives you comfortable headroom for GTA 6 plus the rest of your library.
