How Big Is GTA 6? PS5 File Size and Storage You Need

"How big is GTA 6?" is one of the most-asked questions ahead of launch, and the honest answer is that nobody outside Rockstar knows yet. As of June 20, 2026, Rockstar has not published any official install or file size for GTA 6 on PS5 or any other platform, and no size is listed on the PlayStation Store page. Until that changes, every number you see online is either an estimate or, in one famous case, a hoax.

This page does two things. First, it gives you a realistic planning estimate so you can clear enough space in advance instead of scrambling on launch night. Second, it debunks the viral 676.7GB figure that keeps resurfacing, so you do not buy more storage than you actually need.

The most useful way to estimate an unannounced install size is to look at what comparable games actually shipped at. The figures below are real, confirmed sizes for past Rockstar and AAA console titles, used here only as context for an estimate. They are not a stand-in for the GTA 6 number, which has not been announced.

Rockstar's last two flagship releases landed at roughly 110GB (GTA 5) and roughly 150GB (Red Dead Redemption 2) on console. GTA 6 is a far larger next-gen open world built specifically for current hardware, so it is reasonable to expect it to sit at or above the top of that range. Our best estimate, clearly labeled as an estimate, is roughly 150 to 200GB on PS5.

One more caveat worth planning around: the size at launch and the size after the day-one patch are often different. Big releases frequently ship a large patch on or near launch day, which can push the real on-disk figure higher than the base download. For that reason we suggest treating about 200GB as a planning floor rather than a ceiling, even though the official figure could land lower.

Expect Rockstar to publish the real, confirmed install size as part of pre-launch marketing closer to the November 19, 2026 release date. We will update this page with the official number the moment it is announced.

If you have seen claims that GTA 6 will be 676.7GB, ignore them. That number is a confirmed hoax. It originated from a fake Xbox Store screenshot that circulated in December 2025 and has since been debunked by multiple gaming outlets. There is no legitimate listing, from Rockstar, PlayStation, or Xbox, that has ever shown that size.

Beyond being fake, the figure does not even survive a sanity check. A stock PS5 ships with around 667GB of usable storage after the system software takes its share. A 676.7GB game would not physically fit on a base console, let alone leave room for the operating system, saves, or anything else. The number was designed to look shocking and go viral, not to be plausible.

You do not need an SSD just to play GTA 6, since the PS5 already runs everything from its fast internal drive. You only need one if your console does not have enough free space for an install we expect to be large. If you are tight on room, adding an internal PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD that meets Sony's requirements is the standard fix, and a 2TB drive gives you comfortable headroom for GTA 6 plus the rest of your library.
