GTA 6 download time by internet speed
For a 210GB download. "Realistic" assumes you get 70 percent of your plan speed.
| Speed | Full speed | Realistic |
|---|---|---|
| 25 Mbps | 18h 40m | 1d 2h |
| 50 Mbps | 9h 20m | 13h 20m |
| 100 Mbps | 4h 40m | 6h 40m |
| 300 Mbps | 1h 33m | 2h 13m |
| 500 Mbps | 56m | 1h 20m |
| 1 Gbps | 28m | 40m |
How this calculator works
Internet speeds are sold in megabits per second, while game sizes are listed in gigabytes, and there are 8 bits in a byte. One gigabyte is 1,000 megabytes, or 8,000 megabits, so the arithmetic is a single line: the size in GB, times 8,000, divided by your speed in Mbps, gives the time in seconds. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
The "full speed" figure is the best case: your connection running flat out for the whole download. That rarely happens. Wi-Fi loses speed to distance and walls, other devices share the line, and launch week puts heavy load on PlayStation and Xbox download servers. So the calculator also shows a "more realistic" figure that assumes you get 70 percent of your plan speed. That 70 percent is our own rule of thumb, not a measured or published number, so treat it as a sensible margin rather than a prediction.
The size starts at 210GB because that is the PS5 download size reported on 27 October 2026 from PlayStation Store data. Rockstar has not confirmed it, and the Xbox size has not surfaced, so the size box is editable. When the official number appears, type it in.
A worked example
Take a 100 Mbps connection. 210 times 8,000 is 1,680,000 megabits. Divide by 100 and you get 16,800 seconds, which is 4h 40m. At 70 percent of that speed it becomes about 6h 40m. Either way, a download started when pre-load opens on November 12 is finished days before launch.
Does the pre-load week cover you?
Pre-load opens on November 12, a full week before the November 19 launch. That is 168 hours. Working backwards, a connection of about 4 Mbps finishes a 210GB download inside that week even at the realistic 70 percent rate. Almost any home broadband clears that bar, which is why the single most useful thing you can do is start on the 12th rather than on launch night.
Three ways to finish faster
- Use a wired connection. An Ethernet cable from your router to the console usually delivers far more of your plan speed than Wi-Fi.
- Let it download in rest mode. On PS5, turn on Settings, System, Power Saving, Features Available in Rest Mode, Stay Connected to the Internet, then leave the console resting.
- Clear the space first. A download cannot finish without room for it. Check with the storage planner before November 12.
What this calculator cannot tell you
It does not measure your connection: the result is only as good as the speed you enter, so use a real speed test from the console. It cannot predict how busy download servers will be at launch, which can slow everyone down at once. It ignores the day-one patch, which arrives separately and may need its own download on launch day. And the 210GB size is reported, not confirmed. Use the estimate to decide when to start, not as a promise of when you will finish.
Frequently asked questions
How long will GTA 6 take to download?
It depends on your connection. At 100 Mbps, the 210GB PS5 download reported in October takes about 4h 40m at full speed, or about 6h 40m if you get 70 percent of that speed, which is more typical over Wi-Fi or on busy launch servers.
When can I start downloading GTA 6?
Pre-load opens on November 12, 2026, one week before launch. Digital pre-orders start downloading automatically if automatic downloads are on, and boxed copies contain a download code that also works from November 12.
Will GTA 6 download while my PS5 is in rest mode?
Yes, if you allow it. On PS5, go to Settings, System, Power Saving, Features Available in Rest Mode, and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet. The console then keeps downloading while it rests.
Is the GTA 6 disc faster than downloading?
There is no disc. Take-Two says the physical version contains a download code inside the box, so a boxed copy downloads exactly like a digital one.
