Will GTA 6 Fit on Your PS5?

Two questions: your PS5 model and current free space. The planner gives you an honest yes/no based on a ~150 GB planning estimate (dated 2026-06-16, basis: RDR2 + current-gen AAA sizing - NOT an official Rockstar figure). If you are tight, it points you to the right SSD.

Step 01 // Your PS5 model
Step 02 // How much free space right now?

Check Storage on your PS5 under Settings > Storage to see your current free space.

Why ~150 GB?

Rockstar has not published an install size for GTA 6. The ~150 GB figure is a planning estimate derived from three data points: Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped at roughly 150 GB on PS5; GTA Online has grown substantially since its 2013 launch; and current-gen AAA open-world titles consistently land in the 100-150 GB range. GTA 6 is almost certainly at least as large as RDR2, and could well exceed it given its scope. Treat 150 GB as a floor, not a ceiling.

PS5 games also require free space beyond the install itself: Sony recommends at least 10-15 GB for save data, system cache, and day-one patches. That is the source of the 15 GB headroom buffer in this planner. The full install size will be confirmed in the lead-up to the November 19, 2026 launch - check the GTA 6 PS5 storage guide for the latest.

FAQ // Storage questions answered

How big is GTA 6 on PS5?

Rockstar has not announced an official install size as of June 2026. This tool uses a planning estimate of ~150 GB, dated 2026-06-16, derived from Red Dead Redemption 2 (around 150 GB), GTA Online's growth over time, and current-gen AAA game sizing patterns. The real install size could be larger. This page will be updated the moment Rockstar publishes official figures.

Can you install PS5 games on an external USB drive?

No. PS5 games must be installed on an internal M.2 NVMe SSD - either the built-in drive or a compatible drive in the PS5's expansion slot. You can store PS5 game data on a USB drive, but you cannot play PS5 titles directly from USB. PS4 games work fine from USB drives, but GTA 6 is a PS5-native title and requires an internal M.2 SSD.

Do you need an SSD upgrade for GTA 6?

If you have less than roughly 150 GB free on your PS5's internal storage, you will need to either delete other games or add a compatible M.2 Gen4 NVMe SSD in the PS5 expansion slot. The original PS5 (825 GB model) has about 667 GB of usable space, which fills up quickly if you have a large game library. The PS5 Slim (1 TB) gives around 842 GB usable, and the PS5 Pro (2 TB) gives around 1,860 GB usable.

What SSD should I get for the PS5 expansion slot?

Sony requires an M.2 Gen4 NVMe SSD with a heatsink. Top-rated options include the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB and WD_Black SN850X 2TB - both exceed the PS5's required read speed of 5,500 MB/s and include heatsinks. A 2TB drive is the sweet spot for GTA 6 alongside a full game library.
