GTA 6 PS5 Storage: Install Size and the Best SSD to Buy

The short answer: GTA 6's install size is not confirmed by Rockstar. Our planning estimate is 150GB to 275GB, based on GTA 5 and current AAA install trends (to be updated when Rockstar confirms). To fit GTA 6 and a normal PS5 library, you need an M.2 SSD in the expansion slot. The Samsung 990 Pro 2TB ($189) is the pick, and the Crucial T500 2TB ($135) is the value pick.

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The preload will want that storage space days before launch. Now is the time to sort out whether your console has the room.

How much space GTA 6 will likely need (estimate)

Rockstar has published nothing about install size. Every specific number you see quoted elsewhere is speculation. Here is the honest estimate, labeled as one.

Reference points Rockstar actually shipped:

• GTA 5 on PS5: near 90GB, after a decade of updates
• Red Dead Redemption 2 on console: roughly 120GB or more depending on version
• Modern AAA open-world titles in 2024-2026: routinely 150GB or more at launch, with day-one patches

GTA 6 is a bigger open world than any of those, built from the ground up for current-gen asset density, with an online component from day one.

Our planning estimate: 150GB to 275GB. The lower end assumes aggressive compression and a lean Online at launch. The upper end accounts for high-resolution assets and a large day-one patch. We treat the 200GB midpoint as the most likely scenario, pending Rockstar confirmation.

Why you cannot play PS5 games from a USB drive

This is the rule that catches people out. The PS5 has two kinds of storage expansion:

• USB extended storage can hold PS5 games but cannot run them. You have to copy a game back to the internal SSD or the M.2 slot before playing.
• M.2 NVMe expansion slot is full-speed, first-class storage. PS5 games install and play from it natively, no copying required.

A cheap USB drive is useful for rotating your backlog. It is not a substitute for the M.2 slot. If you want to play GTA 6 (and anything else) without a reinstall ritual every session, the M.2 slot is the fix.

Samsung's vertical integration (controller, NAND, and DRAM all in-house) means consistent sustained behaviour under an open-world streaming load, which is exactly the workload GTA 6 puts on a drive. The default recommendation for anyone who does not want to think about this twice.

2. WD_Black SN850X 2TB - The backup

7,300 MB/s rated read, 6,600 MB/s rated write, TLC, onboard DRAM, five-year warranty, $150. When the 990 Pro is out of stock or carrying a sale price that makes the gap feel wrong, this is the call. It has the largest PS5 install base of any drive in the field and zero unresolved questions. The 150 MB/s rated-read gap to the pick is academic on a console that caps real-world differences between fast Gen 4 drives.

3. Seagate FireCuda 530R 2TB

7,400 MB/s rated read, 6,900 MB/s rated write, TLC, DRAM, five-year warranty plus three years of data recovery service, $179. Spec-for-spec it trades blows with the pick at a $10 discount, but the 990 Pro's track record tips us to keep it at three. If you specifically want the recovery service, this is the only drive here that includes it.

4. Crucial T500 2TB - The value pick

7,400 MB/s rated read, 7,000 MB/s rated write (which beats the 990 Pro on paper), TLC, onboard DRAM, five-year warranty, $135. Micron NAND, consistent firmware, and $54 under the pick. The write advantage is real on spec sheets and likely irrelevant in daily PS5 use, but there is nothing in the T500's profile to apologise for. The default answer for anyone with a real budget ceiling.

How to install an M.2 SSD in the PS5

The short version: power off and unplug, remove the console cover nearest the M.2 bay, remove the slot cover, seat the drive at the correct angle, secure the standoff screw, refit both covers, power on, and let the PS5 format the drive. Total formatted time is about two minutes.

Buy by budget

• $185 or above: Samsung 990 Pro 2TB. Stop reading and order it.
• $145 to $170: WD_Black SN850X 2TB, or the FireCuda 530R if data recovery coverage matters.
• $135: Crucial T500 2TB. The spreadsheet answer. Hard to fault.
• Under $135: Wait for a T500 sale rather than downgrading to a 1TB or a DRAM-less drive. The per-gigabyte math does not favour 1TB at current pricing.

Whatever you fit, do it before the preload window opens. Drive prices trend upward in the two weeks before a major launch.
