Fallout 3 Console Commands

Fallout 3 has a built-in developer console, and it exists on the PC version only. Open it with the backquote or tilde key during play, type a command and press Enter. Some commands switch a mode on and off (god mode, noclip), some act on an NPC or object you have selected (kill, unlock, resurrect), and some take a form ID for an item, perk or quest. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 releases have no console and no cheat codes. The commands are the same in the Game of the Year edition. Every command and ID below was checked against at least two sources and uses base-game IDs; the five add-ons use IDs with their own load-order prefix and are not listed.

Before you use cheats: PC only: the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions have no console. Achievements: Fallout 3's PC achievements ran through Games for Windows Live, which Bethesda removed in an October 2021 update, ending achievement support on current PC versions. Sources disagree on whether the console blocked achievements on older installs, so if you still run one and care about them, keep a clean save. Save safety: back up first. killall, caqs, resetquest, setstage, resurrect and disable can leave quests unfinishable (killall can kill quest characters and companions, and caqs completes every quest, even ones you never started). resurrect can crash the game, setlevel only changes the number, and setgs changes revert when you restart. Add-on IDs start with that add-on's load-order number, which varies between installs, so the IDs here cover the base game only.

How to enter cheats

PC

Load a save and, with the game unpaused, press the console key: backquote (`) or tilde (~), the key under Esc and left of 1 on US and UK keyboards. The HUD disappears, the game pauses and a | prompt appears at the lower left. Type a command, press Enter, then press the same key to close the console. Commands are not case sensitive. Do not type the angle brackets: in player.additem <ItemID> <#>, replace <ItemID> and <#> with a real ID and a number. Many commands act on a target: with the console open, click an NPC, door or object to select it (its name and details appear at the top), then run kill, unlock, resurrect and similar commands; prid <RefID> selects something you cannot click. Other layouts use the key under Esc: ^ on German keyboards, the superscript 2 (²) on French, the backslash on Italian and the double quote on Turkish. Nordic layouts differ between wikis (one lists the section sign or the one-half sign, another lists letters such as Æ, ø and å), so try the key under Esc first. If no key works, set Windows to a US keyboard layout, and turn off any Xbox controller, which can stop the key working.

PlayStation

There is no developer console and there are no cheat codes in the PlayStation 3 version of Fallout 3. None of the commands on this page can be entered, and there are no button-combination cheats.

Xbox

There is no developer console and there are no cheat codes in the Xbox 360 version, which also runs on Xbox One through backward compatibility. None of the commands on this page can be entered, and there are no button-combination cheats.

70 cheats

God Mode & Speed (5)

  • God mode: damage, radiation and drowning stop hurting you, ammunition never runs out and carry weight stops being a limit.

Toggle. Type tgm again to switch it off. Weapons and armor also stop wearing out.

    PC
    tgm
  • Noclip: walk through walls and floors, float over gaps and get unstuck.

Toggle. Run it again to drop back to the ground. With an object selected in the console it toggles that object's collision instead of yours.

    PC
    tcl
  • Change your movement speed. 100 is normal.

Example: player.setav speedmult 150 makes you 50 percent faster. Only you are affected, and very high values make collisions dangerous.

    PC
    player.setav speedmult <#>
  • Raise (or lower) your maximum carry weight.

Example: player.modav carryweight 500 adds 500 to your limit, and a negative number takes it back. Prefer modav over forceav on your own character.

    PC
    player.modav carryweight <#>
  • Refill your health and heal crippled limbs.

With an NPC selected, resethealth without the player. prefix does the same for them.

    PC
    player.resethealth

Items & Caps (6)

  • Add bottle caps, the game's money.

Change 1000 to any amount. Bobby pins use ID 0000000A, for example player.additem 0000000A 50.

    PC
    player.additem 0000000F 1000
  • Add any item to your inventory by form ID and quantity.

Type a real ID and number, not the angle brackets. Leading zeros can be dropped. player.additemhealthpercent <ItemID> <#> <0 to 1> adds the item at a set condition, for example 0.5 for half.

    PC
    player.additem <ItemID> <#>
  • Take items out of your inventory, such as a stuck quest item.

The items are destroyed, not dropped. Read the ID of anything you carry with player.showinventory.

    PC
    player.removeitem <ItemID> <#>
  • List everything you carry together with each item's ID.

    player.inv is the short form.

    PC
    player.showinventory
  • Drop an item or object on the ground next to you.

Many items only accept a count of 1. To place an NPC or creature, use player.placeleveledactoratme <BaseID>.

    PC
    player.placeatme <BaseID> <#>
  • Open the repair menu and fix your gear using your own Repair skill.

Repairs still cost caps, but the caps come back to you, so you need enough in your inventory and lose none.

    PC
    player.srm

Level & XP (4)

  • Give yourself experience points.

A message shows the XP gained. Reaching level 20 takes 29,450 XP in total and level 30 takes 66,700.

    PC
    player.rewardxp <#>
  • Gain a level straight away.

Sets your XP to what the next level needs, so you level up as if you had earned it. getxpfornextlevel prints how much XP the next level requires.

    PC
    player.advlevel
  • Set your level number directly.

Only the number changes: you do not receive the skill points or perks those levels would give, and the GECK wiki recommends rewardxp instead.

    PC
    player.setlevel <#>
  • Change the level cap.

The cap is 20, or 30 with Broken Steel. Game settings reset when you restart the game, so run it again each session.

    PC
    setgs iMaxCharacterLevel <#>

SPECIAL & Skills (4)

  • Set a SPECIAL stat to an exact value.

Stats are strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck, each 1 to 10. setav fixes the value at the number you give.

    PC
    player.setav luck 10
  • Set a skill to an exact value.

Skills run 0 to 100. Names have no spaces: barter, bigguns, energyweapons, explosives, lockpick, medicine, meleeweapons, repair, science, smallguns, sneak, speech, unarmed.

    PC
    player.setav speech 100
  • Add to or subtract from any stat or skill.

Example: player.modav intelligence -2 lowers Intelligence by 2. The wiki says modav stops at the normal maximum, 10 for SPECIAL and 100 for skills.

    PC
    player.modav <Stat> <#>
  • Open the SPECIAL screen with extra points to spend.

You must spend every point to close the screen. If you are stuck, run cam, but not with the Pip-Boy open. addtagskills <#> does the same for extra tag skills.

    PC
    addspecialpoints <#>

Perks (5)

  • Add a perk by form ID. Adding one you already have raises its rank.

IDs below are base-game IDs. Perks from the five add-ons start with that add-on's load-order digits instead of 00, so these IDs do not work for them.

    PC
    player.addperk <PerkID>
  • Remove a perk.

Use the same ID you added it with.

    PC
    player.removeperk <PerkID>
  • Intense Training: one more SPECIAL point each time you add it.

Opens the SPECIAL screen with a point to spend, and the screen will not close until you spend it. If every stat is already 10, use cam to get out. It has 10 ranks.

    PC
    player.addperk 00044CB1
  • Here and Now: an immediate level-up.

Do not add it at the level cap.

    PC
    player.addperk 00031DAC
  • Power Armor Training: lets you wear power armor.

setpccanusepowerarmor 1 is a shortcut that allows power armor without the perk, and setpccanusepowerarmor 0 turns it off again.

    PC
    player.addperk 00058FDF

Karma & Looks (3)

  • Add Karma, or remove it with a negative number.

Examples: player.rewardkarma 250 or player.rewardkarma -250. A message shows the change. player.getav karma prints your current Karma.

    PC
    player.rewardkarma <#>
  • Open the Gene Projector to change sex, race, face and hair.

Changing race switches your perks off until you remove and re-add them. showbarbermenu opens hair only, showplasticsurgeonmenu opens the face only, and player.sexchange flips your sex.

    PC
    showracemenu
  • Rename your character.

Opens the name screen at no cost.

    PC
    shownamemenu

NPCs & Combat (6)

  • Select an NPC or object by reference ID, even if you cannot see it.

Clicking something with the console open selects it too. prid player selects yourself. Most commands in this section act on the selected target.

    PC
    prid <RefID>
  • Kill the selected NPC or creature.

Click the target with the console open first.

    PC
    kill
  • Kill every NPC and creature in the loaded area.

It can also kill quest characters and companions, so save first.

    PC
    killall
  • Bring a dead or knocked-out NPC back to life.

Their inventory is re-rolled. Save first: the GECK wiki warns it can crash the game, and resurrect 1 can drop the NPC through the floor.

    PC
    resurrect
  • Switch off combat AI so enemies stop attacking.

Toggle. Run it again to switch combat back on. tai turns off all AI, not just combat.

    PC
    tcai
  • Remove the selected NPC or object from the world.

enable brings it back. Running markfordelete on a disabled object removes it permanently.

    PC
    disable

Companions (5)

  • Bring the selected companion or NPC to your position.

Select first with a click or prid <RefID>. player.moveto <RefID> does the reverse and moves you to them. openteammatecontainer 1 opens a swap-gear window with the selected NPC. Other reference IDs: Jericho 00003B5D, Clover 000384D8, Sergeant RL-3 00094285, Star Paladin Cross 00062735.

    PC
    moveto player
  • Make the selected NPC unkillable, or mortal again.

Use 0 instead of 1 to make them mortal again. It takes the base ID, not the reference ID. Example for Dogmeat: setessential 0006A772 1, after which he is knocked out instead of killed.

    PC
    setessential <BaseID> 1
  • Select Dogmeat.

Dogmeat's reference ID. His base ID for setessential is 0006A772.

    PC
    prid 0006A775
  • Select Charon.

Charon's reference ID. His base ID for setessential is 000156F6.

    PC
    prid 0002B8E1
  • Select Fawkes.

Fawkes' reference ID. His base ID for setessential is 0003D34E.

    PC
    prid 0002D9CF

Teleport & Unlock (5)

  • Teleport to a named cell.

Cell names are in the Cell name field of each location's page on the Fallout Wiki. The wiki's own example is coc RivetCityExterior01.

    PC
    coc <CellID>
  • Teleport to the Megaton main gate.

A quick way to get outdoors when you are in an interior.

    PC
    coc MegatonMainGate
  • Teleport to a hidden test room that holds a copy of every item.

The containers include cut and unused items. You can only leave by console, for example with coc MegatonMainGate.

    PC
    coc TestQAItems
  • Teleport to your current quest target.

Add 1 or 2 to pick another target when a quest has several. It can drop you in odd or dangerous spots.

    PC
    movetoqt
  • Unlock the selected door, safe, container or terminal.

Click the lock or terminal with the console open first. It does not work on doors locked from the other side. lock <0 to 255> locks things again: 0 is very easy, 50 average and 255 needs a key.

    PC
    unlock

Map & Camera (4)

  • Show every Pip-Boy map marker and make each one a fast-travel destination.

tmm 0 hides them again. It does not change the locations discovered count.

    PC
    tmm 1
  • Toggle fog of war on the Pip-Boy local map.

Run it again to switch it back.

    PC
    tfow
  • Toggle the free camera for screenshots.

tfc 1 also freezes the world while you move the camera. Switch to third person first if you want your character in the shot. fov <#> changes the field of view, and fov 90 gives a wider view without much distortion.

    PC
    tfc
  • Hide or show the HUD and menus.

Handy for clean screenshots. Run it again to bring the interface back.

    PC
    tm

Weather & Time (3)

  • Switch to a weather type by form ID.

Examples from the Fallout Wiki's weather table: fw 00064609 (WastelandClear) and fw 0001D776 (MegatonCloudy01). Add 1 after the ID to hold the weather until ReleaseWeatherOverride is run.

    PC
    fw <WeatherID>
  • Change how fast game time passes.

30 is the default and 1 is real time. Do not change it while NPCs you spawned are fighting; the wiki says that can crash the game.

    PC
    set timescale to <#>
  • Set the time of day.

Hours run 0 to 24 and can have decimals, so 4.5 is 4:30 am and 12 is noon. It takes effect when you close the console.

    PC
    set gamehour to <Hour>

Quests (5)

  • Jump a quest to a given stage.

The stage is marked done and its results run; a quest that is not running is started, and a stage that does not exist does nothing. Quest IDs are form IDs such as 00014E8B (The Waters of Life) or editor IDs such as MQ05. getstage <QuestID> prints the highest finished stage.

    PC
    setstage <QuestID> <Stage>
  • List a quest's stages and whether each one has been set.

Use it to find the stage number you need for setstage.

    PC
    sqs <QuestID>
  • Mark every objective of a quest as completed.

Useful for a bugged objective. completequest <QuestID> only flags the quest as complete, according to the GECK wiki: it runs no stages and gives no rewards.

    PC
    completeallobjectives <QuestID>
  • Reset a quest to its starting state.

Clears its stages, objectives and variables, so you lose that quest's progress. It is also used to re-hire a companion whose dialogue has broken.

    PC
    resetquest <QuestID>
  • Complete every stage of every quest, including ones you never started.

Effectively wipes the quest log and can leave a save unfinishable. Only use it on a throwaway save.

    PC
    caqs

Game & Saves (3)

  • List every console command.

Page Up and Page Down scroll the output. Many entries are leftover debug commands that do not work properly.

    PC
    help
  • Save the game under a name you choose.

    load <Name> loads it again.

    PC
    save <Name>
  • Quit straight to the desktop without going through the menus.

exit shows the credits and returns to the main menu instead.

    PC
    qqq

Aid & Chem IDs (4)

  • Add Stimpaks, which heal 30 hit points and can fix crippled limbs.

    Change 10 to any amount.

    PC
    player.additem 00015169 10
  • Add RadAway, which removes radiation.

Rad-X, which raises radiation resistance for a few minutes, is 00015168.

    PC
    player.additem 00015167 10
  • Add Nuka-Cola Quantum.

It boosts action points for a few minutes, adds a little radiation and can be addictive.

    PC
    player.additem 000284F9 10
  • Add Buffout, which raises Strength, Endurance and maximum health for a few minutes.

Other chems: Med-X 00050F8F, Jet 00015164, Mentats 00015165, Psycho 00015166. Each of these can cause addiction.

    PC
    player.additem 00015163 10

Weapon & Armor IDs (8)

  • Add a Fat Man mini-nuke launcher.

Its ammo is mini nukes: player.additem 00020799 10.

    PC
    player.additem 0000432C 1
  • Add the Experimental MIRV.

It also uses mini nukes (00020799) and, per the wiki, fires eight per shot.

    PC
    player.additem 0003422B 1
  • Add the Alien Blaster.

Its ammo is alien power cells: player.additem 00029364 50.

    PC
    player.additem 00004322 1
  • Add a Gatling Laser.

Its ammo is electron charge packs: player.additem 0006B53E 100.

    PC
    player.additem 0000432E 1
  • Add the hidden .44 Magnum the Mysterious Stranger carries, rated at 9,000 damage per shot.

    Its ammo is .44 rounds: player.additem 0002937E 50.

    PC
    player.additem 00050F92 1
  • Add T-51b power armor.

The matching helmet is 000A6F78. Wearing power armor needs the Power Armor Training perk (00058FDF).

    PC
    player.additem 000A6F77 1
  • Add Tesla armor, which boosts Energy Weapons and radiation resistance.

The matching helmet is 0006B465. It also needs Power Armor Training.

    PC
    player.additem 0006B464 1
  • Add Enclave power armor.

It also needs Power Armor Training.

    PC
    player.additem 0004443E 1

This page covers the commands people search for most, not the whole console: the game's help output lists hundreds of entries, many of them leftover debug commands. Left out on purpose: commands that only one source mentions or that sources contradict (each is in the verification notes), New Vegas-only commands that some Fallout 3 guides copy (tdm, showtraitmenu, the reputation commands), and the add-on items and perks, whose IDs begin with the add-on's load-order digits. For full tables, use the Fallout Wiki's Fallout 3 weapons, armor, consumables, ammunition, perks and quests lists, which show form IDs, and its location pages, whose Cell name field gives the name to use with coc.

FAQ

How do you open the console in Fallout 3?

The console exists on PC only. During normal play, press the backquote or tilde key under Esc, type a command and press Enter. On German keyboards it is the ^ key and on French keyboards the superscript 2 key. If no key works, switch Windows to a US keyboard layout.

What is the god mode command in Fallout 3?

Type tgm to toggle god mode. You stop taking damage, ammunition never runs out and carry weight stops mattering. Type tgm again to turn it off. tcl toggles noclip.

How do you add caps in Fallout 3?

Use player.additem 0000000F followed by the amount, for example player.additem 0000000F 1000 for 1,000 bottle caps. Bobby pins use ID 0000000A in the same command.

Are there cheats for Fallout 3 on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360?

No. The console and typed commands exist only in the PC version. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 releases have no console and no button-combination cheat codes.

Do console commands disable achievements in Fallout 3?

Sources disagree. The Fallout Wiki's Fallout 3 achievements page says console use on PC does not block achievements, while its shared console page says it switches Steam achievements off until you restart. Fallout 3's achievements were tied to Games for Windows Live, which Bethesda removed from the Steam version in October 2021, and NME reported that this ended achievement support there. For a run where achievements matter, avoid the console.

How do you add a perk or gain levels in Fallout 3?

Use player.addperk with the perk's form ID, for example player.addperk 00044CB1 for Intense Training. For levels, player.rewardxp followed by an amount gives XP, and player.advlevel gains a level at once. The level cap is 20, or 30 with Broken Steel.
