Fallout New Vegas Console Commands

Fallout: New Vegas has a built-in developer console, and it exists on the PC version only. You open it with the tilde or backquote key, type a command and press Enter. Commands either switch a mode on and off (god mode, noclip), act on an NPC or object you have selected, or take a form ID for an item, perk, quest or reputation. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 releases have no console and no cheat codes. Every command and ID below was checked against at least two independent sources and uses base-game IDs; the one add-on ID mentioned is written with its XX load-order prefix.

Before you use cheats: PC ONLY: the console does not exist on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 releases. Achievements: on the Steam version, running console commands turns achievements off for that play session. The Fallout Wiki and SegmentNext both say that merely opening the console does not, and that quitting and relaunching the game switches achievements back on, so avoid commands during a run where achievements matter. One older Fallout Wiki page claims that opening the console alone is enough to disable them, so if achievements matter, do not open it either. Save safety: keep a backup save before experimenting. caqs, completequest, resetquest, setstage, kill, killall and resurrect can leave quests unfinishable, and caqs wipes out every quest at once. resurrect does not undo a quest failure caused by someone's death, and killall also hits companions (it only knocks them out outside Hardcore mode but kills them in Hardcore mode). coc can drop you into a bottomless pit at some locations, and using coc or movetoqt from inside a Strip casino can cost you the weapons the casino confiscated. forceav overrides the game's own recalculation of a stat, set timescale can crash the game if NPCs you spawned or moved enter combat, and srm on an NPC who does not repair gear usually crashes it. Add-on (DLC) IDs: base-game IDs start with 00, while add-on IDs start with that add-on's position in your load order, which differs between installs and is written XX on wikis. All IDs on this page are base game except the one written with XX. This is a single-player game, so console use carries no online ban risk.

How to enter cheats

PC

Load a save and, with the game unpaused, press the console key: the tilde (~) or backquote (`) key, which is the key under Esc and left of 1 on a US keyboard. The HUD disappears, the game pauses and a | prompt appears in the lower left of the screen. Type a command and press Enter, then press the same key again to close the console. Capitalization does not matter. Do not type the angle brackets in templates such as player.additem <ItemID> <#>; replace each one with a real value. Many commands act on a target: with the console open, click an NPC or object to select it (its reference ID appears at the top of the screen), then run kill, unlock, resurrect and so on, or use prid <RefID> to select something you cannot see. On non-US layouts the console key is usually the one under Esc: the caret (^) on German keyboards, the superscript 2 on French keyboards, the backslash (\) on Italian keyboards and the double quote (") on Turkish keyboards. Nordic layouts differ between wikis (one lists the section sign or the one-half sign, another lists Ae, O-umlaut, o-slash or a-ring), so try the key under Esc first. UK keyboards use the grave (`) key left of 1. If no key works, the independent Fallout Wiki (fallout.wiki) suggests switching Windows to a US keyboard layout.

PlayStation

There is no developer console and there are no cheat codes in the PlayStation 3 version of Fallout: New Vegas. None of the commands on this page can be entered, and there are no button-combination cheats.

Xbox

There is no developer console and there are no cheat codes in the Xbox 360 version, which is also the version that runs on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility. None of the commands on this page can be entered, and there are no button-combination cheats.

All Fallout New Vegas commands

71 cheats

God Mode & Survival (5)

  • God mode: you take no damage, your ammo never runs out and your carry weight is unlimited.

Toggle. Type tgm again to switch it off. Use tdm instead if you want ammunition to keep running out.

    PC
    tgm
  • Demigod mode: your health never drops, but ammunition is still used and you still reload.

Toggle. New Vegas only; the command does not exist in Fallout 3. Most guides say carry weight is unlimited in this mode too, though two say it is not.

    PC
    tdm
  • Refill your hit points and repair crippled limbs.

Leave off the player. prefix and resethealth works on the NPC you have selected instead.

    PC
    player.resethealth
  • Set the condition of the weapon you are holding to a percentage; 100 is a full repair.

Use any number from 1 to 100. Only the weapon in your hands is changed.

    PC
    player.setweaponhealthperc 100
  • Open the repair menu so you can mend your own gear with your Repair skill, the way a vendor would.

Any caps charged are paid straight back to you, so repairs cost nothing overall, but you need enough caps in hand to cover each repair. Running srm without the player. prefix on an NPC who does not repair gear usually crashes the game.

    PC
    player.srm

Movement, Camera & Map (4)

  • Toggle collision (noclip): pass through walls and floors and drift freely. Also the standard fix for a character stuck in the scenery.

Run it again to settle back onto the ground. If an object is selected in the console, tcl toggles that object's collision instead of yours, so click away from targets first.

    PC
    tcl
  • Toggle the free camera, which detaches the view from your character for screenshots or scouting.

tfc 1 also pauses the world while the camera stays movable. Switch to third person first if you want your character in the shot. sucsm <#> sets how fast the free camera moves.

    PC
    tfc
  • Toggle the HUD and all menus on or off, handy for clean screenshots.

The console text disappears along with everything else, so type tm again blind to bring the interface back.

    PC
    tm
  • Reveal every location marker on the Pip-Boy map and make them available for fast travel.

tmm 0 hides them again. tmm 1 0 1 shows all markers, including hidden ones, without letting you fast travel to them. The Explorer perk (ID 00031DE5) is the in-game way to have every location marked on your map.

    PC
    tmm 1

Items, Caps & Inventory (7)

  • Add any item to your inventory by form ID and quantity.

Skip the angle brackets. Base-game IDs start with 00 and the leading zeros can be dropped, so player.additem 8ED03 300 adds 300 9mm rounds. Items arrive in full condition. Add-on (DLC) items start with the add-on's load-order number instead of 00, shown as XX on wikis.

    PC
    player.additem <ItemID> <#>
  • Add bottle caps, the game's money.

    Example: player.additem 0000000F 10000 adds 10,000 caps.

    PC
    player.additem 0000000F <#>
  • Take items out of your inventory, such as quest items that have become stuck.

Use player.showinventory to read the ID of anything you are carrying.

    PC
    player.removeitem <ItemID> <#>
  • List everything you are carrying together with each item's ID.

    player.inv does the same thing.

    PC
    player.showinventory
  • Spawn an NPC, creature, container or object next to you by base ID.

It needs a base ID, not a reference ID, and the spawn lands right on top of you, so stand somewhere open. Many items accept only an amount of 1. Do not use it to retrieve a companion, because it creates a clone; use prid and moveto player instead.

    PC
    player.placeatme <BaseID> <#>
  • Make power armor wearable without completing the quests that normally unlock it.

Use setpccanusepowerarmor 0 to turn the ability off again, even if you earned it normally.

    PC
    setpccanusepowerarmor 1
  • Open the workbench crafting menu from anywhere.

Campfire recipes use player.showrecipemenu 0013B2C0. The Sierra Madre vending machine category is XX0103A0, where XX is the Dead Money load-order number.

    PC
    player.showrecipemenu 0013B2C1

Level, XP, SPECIAL & Skills (10)

  • Set your character level directly.

Only the level number changes. For the skill points and perk picks that normal leveling gives, use player.rewardxp or player.advlevel. The level cap is 30 in the base game and rises by 5 with each of the four add-ons, up to 50.

    PC
    player.setlevel <#>
  • Gain one level at once, including its level-up rewards.

It does not add experience points, so you will not level again until you have earned the XP that the skipped levels would have needed.

    PC
    player.advlevel
  • Give yourself experience points; any levels you earn are applied immediately, one after another.

Example: player.rewardxp 15000. The level cap still applies (30 in the base game, up to 50 with all four add-ons).

    PC
    player.rewardxp <#>
  • Raise or lower a SPECIAL attribute. Valid names: strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility, luck.

The number is added to the current value, so player.modav strength 2 adds 2 and a negative number subtracts. The result stops at the normal maximum of 10.

    PC
    player.modav <attribute> <#>
  • Raise or lower a skill. Valid names, each written as one word: barter, energyweapons, explosives, guns, lockpick, medicine, meleeweapons, repair, science, sneak, speech, survival, unarmed.

Example: player.modav energyweapons 25 adds 25 points. The result stops at 100.

    PC
    player.modav <skill> <#>
  • Set a skill or SPECIAL attribute to an exact value.

Example: player.forceav medicine 50. Skills accept 1 to 100 and SPECIAL accepts 1 to 10. forceav overrides the game's own recalculation, so later changes such as gaining Strength no longer update that stat; the Fallout Wiki suggests modav when you may want to undo a change. player.setav <ActorValue> <#> is the other common way to set a value.

    PC
    player.forceav <ActorValue> <#>
  • Raise your carry capacity by the amount you give.

Example: player.modav carryweight 150 adds 150 to your limit. The Fallout Wiki warns that editing carry weight directly can interfere with Strength raising your capacity afterward.

    PC
    player.modav carryweight <#>
  • Change your movement speed as a percentage, where 100 is normal.

Use 50 to halve your speed and 200 to double it. Set it back to 100 to return to normal.

    PC
    player.setav speedmult <#>
  • Add Karma, or remove it by using a negative number.

Examples: rewardkarma 100 and rewardkarma -1000. player.getav karma shows your current Karma.

    PC
    rewardkarma <#>
  • Turn Hardcore mode on or off.

Use 1 to turn it on and 0 to turn it off.

    PC
    player.sethardcore 1

Perks & Traits (6)

  • Give yourself a perk or trait by form ID.

The perk takes effect even if you do not meet its level or stat requirements. Adding Intense Training opens the SPECIAL screen at once with a point to spend.

    PC
    player.addperk <PerkID>
  • Remove a perk or trait you have.

Removing Intense Training does not take back the SPECIAL point it gave.

    PC
    player.removeperk <PerkID>
  • Intense Training perk ID: one extra point in any SPECIAL attribute per rank, up to 10 ranks. Use with player.addperk.

    PC
    00044CB1
  • Educated perk ID: two extra skill points every time you level up. Use with player.addperk.

    PC
    00031DD8
  • Comprehension perk ID: one extra skill point from each skill book and double points from skill magazines. Use with player.addperk.

    PC
    00031DE1
  • Cannibal perk ID: lets you eat human corpses while sneaking to regain health, at a cost in Karma. Use with player.addperk.

    PC
    00094EBC

Character Menus (5)

  • Reopen the race, sex and face editor from character creation.

Changing race this way can switch your perks off; remove and re-add them afterward. Save first.

    PC
    showracemenu
  • Open the hairstyle menu only.

    PC
    showbarbermenu
  • Open the menu that lets you rename your character.

    PC
    shownamemenu
  • Open the face editor.

    PC
    showplasticsurgeonmenu
  • Open the trait menu so you can pick your traits again.

    PC
    showtraitmenu

Reputation & Factions (6)

  • Add fame (1) or infamy (0) with a faction or town.

Example: addreputation 000F43DE 1 5 adds 5 points of NCR fame. Reputation tops out at 100 and the game handles about 5 points per command, so repeat it for bigger changes. Idolized needs fame of 90 and infamy below 4. These reputation IDs are not the faction IDs used by setally and addtofaction.

    PC
    addreputation <ReputationID> <1 or 0> <#>
  • Subtract fame (1) or infamy (0) with a faction or town.

Example: removereputation 000F43DD 0 5 removes 5 points of Caesar's Legion infamy. Values stop at 0.

    PC
    removereputation <ReputationID> <1 or 0> <#>
  • Set fame (1) or infamy (0) with a faction or town to a specific value.

Example: setreputation 0011E662 1 5 sets Brotherhood of Steel fame to 5. Values run from 0 to 100.

    PC
    setreputation <ReputationID> <1 or 0> <#>
  • New California Republic (NCR) reputation ID. Use as the first argument of addreputation, removereputation and setreputation.

    PC
    000F43DE
  • Caesar's Legion reputation ID. Use as the first argument of addreputation, removereputation and setreputation.

The Fallout Wiki notes that raising Legion reputation while Boone is your companion can make him question you or leave.

    PC
    000F43DD
  • Brotherhood of Steel reputation ID. Use as the first argument of addreputation, removereputation and setreputation.

    PC
    0011E662

NPCs & Combat (5)

  • Kill the NPC you have selected.

Click the target with the console open, or pick it with prid <RefID>. Killing quest characters can fail their quests.

    PC
    kill
  • Kill every non-invincible NPC and creature nearby.

Allies are hit too: companions are knocked unconscious outside Hardcore mode but killed in Hardcore mode. Essential characters you cannot see can be caught as well, which can break quests.

    PC
    killall
  • Bring the selected dead NPC back to life.

Their inventory is re-rolled, so their items may change; resurrect 1 keeps the original inventory. It does not undo a quest failure caused by their death.

    PC
    resurrect
  • Toggle combat AI so NPCs stop fighting.

Toggle. NPCs stay hostile but stop attacking.

    PC
    tcai
  • Toggle detection so NPCs cannot notice you, which gives perfect stealth.

    Toggle.

    PC
    tdetect

Companions (5)

  • Select an NPC or object by reference ID, the same as clicking it, even when it is out of view.

Most NPC commands need a selected target. Reference IDs are different from base IDs, and leading zeros can be dropped (prid 96bce).

    PC
    prid <RefID>
  • Teleport the selected NPC to you, for example a companion that got lost.

Select the NPC with prid <RefID> first. They can pop in on top of your character. player.moveto <RefID> does the reverse and moves you to them.

    PC
    moveto player
  • Open the selected NPC's inventory as if they were a companion, so you can move items to or from them.

    PC
    OpenTeammateContainer 1
  • Select Craig Boone by his reference ID.

Follow it with moveto player to bring him to you, or run player.moveto 00096BCE to go to him. This is his reference ID, not his base ID.

    PC
    prid 00096BCE
  • Select Arcade Gannon by his reference ID.

Follow it with moveto player to bring him to you, or run player.moveto 0010D8EB to go to him. This is his reference ID, not his base ID.

    PC
    prid 0010D8EB

Locks & Teleport (3)

  • Unlock the door, safe, container or terminal you have selected.

Type unlock, then click the target. It can fail on a few locks, and forcing a door that is not meant to open can drop you into an empty pit.

    PC
    unlock
  • Lock the selected door, container or terminal at a chosen difficulty.

0 is very easy, 25 easy, 50 average, 75 hard and 100 very hard; a higher number makes it require a key.

    PC
    lock <level>
  • Teleport to a location by its cell editor ID.

Use the editor ID from the Fallout Wiki cell list, not the hex form ID; for example coc Goodsprings takes you to Goodsprings. It does not work for every location, can freeze weaker PCs and can drop you into a pit. Avoid it from inside a Strip casino, where it can cost you your confiscated weapons.

    PC
    coc <CellID>

Time & Weather (4)

  • Set how fast in-game time passes. The default is 30; 1 runs the clock at real-time speed.

Save first. The Fallout Wiki warns the game can crash if NPCs created with placeleveledactoratme or moveto player enter combat while the timescale is changed.

    PC
    set timescale to <#>
  • Jump the in-game clock to a chosen hour.

The change applies once you close the console and unpause. Back up your save first.

    PC
    set gamehour to <hour>
  • Force the clear Mojave weather and hold it there.

fw takes a weather ID, and the 1 stops the weather from changing back by itself. Only this one New Vegas weather ID was confirmed; the Fallout Wiki's weather table is Fallout 3 data.

    PC
    fw NVWastelandClear 1
  • Release a forced weather so the normal weather cycle resumes.

    Short form: rwo.

    PC
    releaseweatheroverride

Quests (5)

  • Teleport to your current quest target.

Avoid it from inside a Strip casino, where it can cost you your confiscated weapons.

    PC
    movetoqt
  • Mark a quest as complete.

For getting past a bugged quest, the Fallout Wiki recommends setstage over completing the whole quest.

    PC
    completequest <QuestID>
  • Move a quest to a specific stage, the usual fix for a bugged quest.

Stage numbers differ for every quest. Jumping to the wrong stage can leave a quest stuck, so keep a backup save.

    PC
    setstage <QuestID> <Stage>
  • Reset a quest so it can be started again.

It also removes the quest from your log, and you may have to redo other quests before it is offered again. It can also repair a companion's hire quest when that companion starts giving only generic replies.

    PC
    resetquest <QuestID>
  • Complete every stage of every quest in the game, including quests you have not started.

This wipes out all quests without ending the game. Use it only on a throwaway save.

    PC
    caqs

Popular Item IDs (6)

  • Stimpak: the basic healing item.

    PC
    player.additem 00015169 1
  • Super Stimpak: a stronger healing item with a short Strength and Agility penalty.

    PC
    player.additem 000CCEF2 1
  • RadAway: removes radiation.

    PC
    player.additem 00015167 1
  • Lucky: a unique .357 Magnum revolver.

    PC
    player.additem 000E2C86 1
  • Ranger Sequoia: a unique .45-70 Gov't revolver.

    PC
    player.additem 00129A44 1
  • T-45d power armor.

Wearing it needs Power Armor Training or setpccanusepowerarmor 1.

    PC
    player.additem 00014E13 1

This file covers the commands players search for most, plus a short list of verified base-game IDs. Fallout: New Vegas has roughly a thousand cell IDs, hundreds of quest IDs, about 200 perk IDs and thousands of item IDs, so the full tables are best read at their source: the Fallout Wiki cell ID page (fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas_cell_ID), its quest ID page (fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas_quest_IDs), its perk list, and Game8's weapon, armor, perk, quest, consumable and ammo ID pages. Left out on purpose: commands that need the JIP LN NVSE plugin (such as search), the faction IDs used by setally and addtofaction (they differ from the reputation IDs used here), reputation IDs for towns, the Powder Gangers, the Boomers, the Followers of the Apocalypse, the Great Khans and the White Glove Society (all listed on the Fallout Wiki), weather IDs other than NVWastelandClear, reference IDs for companions other than Boone and Arcade Gannon, and add-on (DLC) IDs, which change with your load order.

FAQ

How do you open the console in Fallout: New Vegas?

On PC, load a save and press the tilde (~) or backquote (`) key, which sits under Esc and left of 1 on a US keyboard. The game pauses and a | prompt appears at the bottom left. Type a command, press Enter, and press the same key again to close the console. Capitalization does not matter, and the console exists only on the PC version.

What is the god mode command in Fallout: New Vegas?

Type tgm to toggle god mode, which stops damage, removes ammo use and lifts the carry weight limit. Run tgm again to turn it off. tdm is the New Vegas demigod mode, which keeps your health from dropping but still uses ammunition.

How do you add caps in Fallout: New Vegas?

Use player.additem 0000000F followed by an amount, for example player.additem 0000000F 10000 to add 10,000 caps. 0000000F is the form ID of the bottle cap.

Do console commands disable achievements in Fallout: New Vegas?

On the Steam version, running console commands turns achievements off for that session. The Fallout Wiki says that just opening the console does not, and that quitting and relaunching the game switches achievements back on.

Can you use console commands on PS3 or Xbox 360?

No. The developer console exists only in the PC version of Fallout: New Vegas. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 releases have no console and no button-combination cheat codes.

How do you level up or raise SPECIAL and skills with commands?

player.rewardxp followed by an amount grants experience and applies any levels earned right away, and player.advlevel adds a single level. player.modav with an attribute or skill name adds to it, for example player.modav strength 2 or player.modav guns 25, and player.forceav sets an exact value instead.
