The Sims Cheats (The Sims 1)

The Sims (2000) has its cheats built in. On PC and Mac you open a small text box with a key shortcut and type commands such as rosebud or move_objects on. EA's 2025 Legacy Collection (Windows 10 and 11, with the base game and all seven expansion packs) keeps that box, but only part of the old command list is confirmed to work there, so each entry says what is known. The 2003 PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube versions work differently: you hold shoulder buttons on the main menu to open a code screen and type one of five words.

Before you use cheats: move_objects removes the game's safety limits. The Sims Wiki warns that deleted fixed items such as the mailbox, trash can, carpool and the portals that let Sims and vehicles enter and leave a lot usually cannot be replaced, and that Buy mode has no Undo (Build mode does). Turn it off when you finish and be careful what you delete. Deleting a Sim with it to refill their needs also resets their skills to the last save (Sims Wiki), so save first; a Legacy fan guide adds that the game may crash if the Sim is mid-animation. prepare_lot will not bring back items you removed on purpose, and the same fan guide says to use map_edit carefully. On PS2, Xbox and GameCube, Game Revolution warns that FREEALL can mess up a game if you save while it is active, and CheatCC says it may cause problems with saved games.

How to enter cheats

PC

During play, press Ctrl+Shift+C to open a small text box in the top-left corner. Type a cheat exactly as shown and press Enter; press Ctrl+Shift+C again to close the box. The game tells you when a cheat does not exist, so check your spelling. The 2025 Legacy Collection (Windows 10 and 11, with the base game and all seven expansion packs) uses the same box, but klapaucius no longer works and EA lists only 15 commands for it. If another program has taken the shortcut, the Sims Wiki says to add the Windows key.

Mac

Older Mac releases open the same cheat box with Control+Shift+C (the Control key, not Command) and take the classic text commands such as rosebud, move_objects, set_hour and autonomy. If that does nothing, try Command+Shift+C, which the Sims Wiki lists for Mac. The Legacy Collection has no Mac version.

PlayStation

PlayStation 2 only. On the main menu, hold L1, L2, R1 and R2 together to open the cheat menu, then type a code; the game confirms or rejects it with a voice. The codes are typed words, not button sequences.

Xbox

Original Xbox only. On the main menu, hold the left and right triggers (LT and RT; guides print them as L and R) together to open the cheat menu, then type a code.

GameCube

On the main menu, hold L and R together to open the cheat menu, then type a code.

Money & Cheat Box Basics (5)

  • Add 1,000 Simoleons to the household

The money cheat that works in patched installs and in the Legacy Collection. EA lists it and PC Gamer and Screen Rant both tested it. Older Mac guides list it too.

    PC
    rosebud
  • Add 5,000 or 10,000 Simoleons in one entry

Each ;! repeats the previous cheat once, so four of them give 5,000 in total and nine give 10,000. PC Gamer and Screen Rant tested these totals. Add more ;! for more money.

    PC
    rosebud;!;!;!;!
    PC

  • Add 1,000 Simoleons in the original unpatched game

Only the unpatched version 1.0 base game accepts it. Patched games and the Legacy Collection reject it, so use rosebud there.

    PC
    klapaucius
  • Repeat the last cheat you typed

Type ! on its own and press Enter. It is the building block of the money stacking trick above.

    PC
    !
  • Run several cheats with one Enter press

Separate the cheats with a semicolon. This example adds 1,000 Simoleons and turns move_objects on in one go.

    PC

Objects & Lot Editing (7)

  • Pick up, move or delete objects the game normally locks, including the mailbox, trash and items in use

In the Legacy Collection it does not let you place items freely or clipping into each other (PC Gamer); it only lifts the usual pick-up and delete limits. Deleted fixed objects such as the mailbox and trash can usually cannot be bought back and Buy mode has no Undo, so make edits in Build mode and turn the cheat off afterwards.

    PC

  • Check the lot for required objects and repair what is missing

Looks for essentials such as the mailbox and trash can. GamesRadar and a Legacy fan guide say it does not bring back objects you deleted on purpose with move_objects. On EA's list.

    PC
    prepare_lot
  • Add a tool for placing water such as moats and streams around the lot

Documented for the original game by the Sims Wiki and many older lists. It is not on EA's Legacy Collection list, so it may not work there. The Sims Wiki says water placement was later built into Build mode.

    PC
    water_tool
  • Turn the map editor on or off

Sources describe it as unlocking tiles outside your lot, even the street (PCGamesN, Giga), or as a neighborhood map editor (a Legacy fan guide that urges care). GamesRadar lists it as working in the Legacy Collection; EA does not list it.

  • Have the architecture tools set the floor level automatically as you build

Documented for the original game; not on EA's Legacy Collection list.

    PC
    auto_level
  • Set the grass growth level on the lot

Use a number from 0 to 150; higher means more grass. Documented for the original game and in a Legacy fan guide; not on EA's list.

    PC
    grow_grass [0-150]

    On EA's Legacy Collection list.

Sims & Gameplay (8)

  • Set how much Sims act on their own

At 100 Sims follow their own needs without being told; at 1 they stand around until you give orders (PC Gamer, Screen Rant). EA lists 0-100 and most guides say 1-100. You can also switch free will off and on in Options > Play Options. On EA's list.

    PC
    autonomy 100
    PC
    autonomy 1
  • Show the selected Sim's interests

It only displays them: EA, PC Gamer, Screen Rant and GameSpot describe it that way, though a few older lists claim it edits personality. On EA's list.

    PC

  • Set the time of day

Uses the 24-hour clock, so 12 is noon and 13 is 1 pm. It changes the clock without simulating the skipped hours, so Sims do not lose needs for them (PC Gamer). Guides give 1-24 or 0-23 as the range. On EA's list.

    PC
    set_hour 12
  • Set the Live Mode game speed

800 is normal speed, 1000 is ultra speed and 1 slows play to a crawl (PC Gamer, Screen Rant, GameSpot). EA's list says it accepts -1,000 to 10,000, and older guides treat 0 as normal. On EA's list.

GameSpot says it lets you command other Sims on the lot; older lists say visitors can be steered with the keyboard. Not on EA's list.

    PC
    visitor_control
  • Open the character creation screen during play

Documented for the original game. It is not on EA's Legacy Collection list and a Legacy fan guide says it is locked there, so expect it to work only in the original.

    PC
    edit_char
  • Save the family history to a text file

Writes FamilyHistory.txt in the game's install folder. On EA's list.

    PC
    history
  • Add a history stat to the current family

Documented for the original game; not on EA's Legacy Collection list.

Needs an expansion pack: it only works in the Downtown (Hot Date), Old Town (Unleashed) or Vacation Island (Vacation) neighborhood views. On EA's list.

Console Cheat Menu (PS2, Xbox, GameCube) (6)

  • Open the cheat menu on the main menu

Written as text because the buttons are held together, not pressed in order. Do it on the main menu; the cheat menu is a text entry screen where you type the words below. Guides print the Xbox buttons as L and R, meaning the left and right triggers.

    PlayStation

    Xbox
    Hold LT + RT
    GameCube
    Hold L + R
  • Unlock all two-player games, objects and skins

Typed word, not a button sequence: open the cheat menu first by holding the buttons from the first console entry on the main menu, then type it. Most guides add a finishing step: start Get A Life, get in the hot tub with the girl, pause, then choose Quit and Just Quit.

Covers 41 entries: 35 PC text commands and cheat-box helpers (older Mac releases take the classic ones) and 6 console entries (the menu chord plus five typed cheat-menu words) for the PS2, Xbox and GameCube versions. Of the 32 PC commands, 20 are on EA's official Legacy Collection list or on GamesRadar's list of cheats it confirmed there; the other 12 are published as original-game cheats with a note. Not included: developer-only commands (crash, core_dump, flush, assert, fam_test, dump_happy, write_destlist, sound_log), commands whose effect sources describe vaguely or inconsistently (edit_grass, lot_size, house, import, draw_origins, cam_mode, preview_anims, sim_limit, the tutorial commands), codes found in only one source (see flagged), Action Replay and GameShark codes, and unlock tips such as the Get A Life rewards, which are not cheat codes.

FAQ

How do you open the cheat box in The Sims 1?

On PC, including the 2025 Legacy Collection, press Ctrl+Shift+C during play, type a command and press Enter. Older Mac releases use Control+Shift+C. On the PS2, Xbox and GameCube versions you instead hold shoulder buttons on the main menu (L1, L2, R1 and R2 on PS2; L and R on Xbox and GameCube) to open a code screen.

What is the money cheat in The Sims 1?

Type rosebud to add 1,000 Simoleons. Each ;! you add after it repeats the cheat once, so rosebud;!;!;!;! gives 5,000 and nine ;! give 10,000. The older klapaucius code only works in the unpatched original game.

Does move_objects on let you place items anywhere?

No, not in the Legacy Collection. PC Gamer found it only lets you pick up, move or delete things the game normally locks, such as trash, puddles and objects in use. Deleting fixed items like the mailbox or trash can usually cannot be undone, so turn it off when you are done.

Is there a cheat that fills a Sim's needs?

No. GameSpot and PC Gamer both say The Sims 1 has no needs cheat. Some players delete the chair or bed under a Sim with move_objects on and click the Sim's portrait to bring them back, but reports on whether that works in the Legacy Collection differ.

What are the cheats on PS2, Xbox and GameCube?

Open the code screen on the main menu, then type MIDAS (unlock two-player games, objects and skins), FREEALL (free items), PARTY M (Party Motel), SIMS (Play The Sims mode) or FISH EYE (first-person view). FREEALL can cause problems with saved games.

Do the old cheats work in the Legacy Collection?

The common ones do. EA lists 15 commands for it, including rosebud, move_objects, set_hour, sim_speed, autonomy and interests, and PC Gamer and Screen Rant tested the main ones. Older debug commands such as water_tool and edit_char are not on EA's list, so they may not work, and klapaucius does not.
