The Sims 2 Cheats

The Sims 2 keeps its cheats in a text box on PC and Mac and behind button codes on the 2005 PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube releases. On PC you press Ctrl+Shift+C (Command+Shift+C on a Mac), type a command such as kaching or motherlode, and press Enter. Many commands came with expansion packs, so entries that need a pack name it; EA's 2025 Legacy Collection includes every pack. The console versions are a different game: you summon a Cheat Gnome with a button code, then use a short list of unlock codes.

Before you use cheats: Back up your neighborhood folder before you start: The Sims 2 gives very little on-screen confirmation (PC Gamer, GameSpot), and the Sims Wiki urges regular backups in the Legacy Collection because of crash bugs unrelated to cheats. moveObjects removes the game's protection on fixed items: the Sims Wiki says a deleted mailbox or trash can cannot be brought back, and SimsWiki.info says deleting the mailbox, trash can or community phone can cause lot problems. Sources disagree about deleted Sims: the Sims Wiki and SimsWiki.info say a deleted Sim returns at the mailbox when the lot reloads, while PC Gamer says deleting a Sim removes it from the family and a GameFAQs contributor says it is permanent unless you skip saving, so do not delete Sims with it. deleteAllCharacters wipes every Sim and townie from the neighborhood: SimsWiki.info calls the result irreversible neighborhood corruption and the Sims Wiki corruption guide says to avoid it, so never use it on a neighborhood you play. boolProp snapObjectsToGrid can corrupt a lot if it is used in ways that conflict with other objects, leaving the lot inaccessible from the neighborhood view (Sims Wiki). changeLotZoning on a lot with Sims living in it can stop the lot from saving or make it vanish (Sims Wiki corruption guide), and zoning a beach lot as an apartment damages the terrain (SimsWiki.info). setHighestAllowedLevel above 16 floors crashes the game. boolProp testingCheatsEnabled is safe to leave on according to the Sims Wiki, but its menu options can corrupt a game, for example making special NPCs playable or adding them to a household, and TheGamer says one misclick can kill a Sim. On the PS2, Xbox and GameCube versions, advancing the clock six hours while a Sim is at work or away can cause problems when they return (Cheat Code Central, Sims Wiki).

How to enter cheats

PC

During play, press Ctrl+Shift+C to open the cheat box (a white bar at the top of the screen), type a command exactly as written here and press Enter. Esc or the exit command closes it. The game gives very little feedback, so watch the screen to see whether a cheat worked. If Windows or another program already uses Ctrl+Shift+C, the Sims Wiki says to add the Windows key (Ctrl+Shift+Win+C). Some guides report that certain commands are case-sensitive, so copy the capitalization shown. Settings written as boolProp take true or false (EA says on and off also work). EA's guide starts with boolProp testingCheatsEnabled true, but the Sims Wiki, SimsWiki.info, GameSpot, PC Gamer and TheGamer say the standard cheats work without it and that it is only needed for the Shift+click debug menu. The list applies to the original discs and the Legacy Collection. Mac players use the same text commands with a different shortcut (see the Mac entry).

Mac

Press Command+Shift+C to open the cheat box (the Sims Wiki, Simlogical and Destructoid agree), then use the same text commands listed for PC. Some older Mac guides on GameFAQs and Neoseeker say Control+Shift+C, and one Neoseeker tip says Option+Control+Shift+C, so try those if Command+Shift+C does nothing.

PlayStation

PlayStation 2 only (The Sims 2, 2005); there is no text box. Enter the Cheat Gnome code first and a plumb bob post appears on the lot. Then enter the other codes and, where an entry says so, select the gnome and pick the matching option from its menu. Sources disagree on timing: Cheat Code Central, Cheat Happens and GameRevolution say to enter the buttons during play, while GameFAQs, GamesRadar and the Sims Wiki say to pause first (the Sims Wiki names the Relationship panel of the pause menu). Codes can fail on the first try, so repeat them if nothing happens.

Xbox

Original Xbox only. Enter the master code LT, RT, Up, A, Black (older guides print LT and RT as L and R, meaning the left and right triggers) and a plumb bob post appears on the lot. Walk a Sim to it and press A to open its menu, then enter the other codes as listed. The Sims Wiki notes that the game can be played on Xbox 360 but is not on the Xbox One or Series X|S backward compatibility lists. Timing advice differs by source as on PS2, and codes can take a few tries.

GameCube

GameCube only. Enter the gnome code L, R, Up, A, Z (the L and R shoulder buttons and the Z button) and a plumb bob post appears on the lot. Select it with a Sim to open its menu and enter the remaining codes as listed. Timing advice differs by source as on PS2, and codes can take a few tries.

96 cheats

Money & Household Funds (3)

  • Add 1,000 Simoleons to the household

Works in the base game and can be repeated as often as you like.

    PC
    kaching
  • Add 50,000 Simoleons to the household

Works in the base game and can be repeated. The Sims Wiki says a household's funds top out at 9,999,999.

    PC
    motherlode
  • Set a family's funds to an exact amount, or add or subtract money

Replace Goth with the family's last name and 50000 with the amount. Put + or - directly before the number to add or subtract instead of setting (familyFunds Goth +5000). If two families share a surname, only the one added most recently is changed, and SimsWiki.info says to put quotes around names that contain a space. Needs The Sims 2: Nightlife or a later expansion.

    PC
    familyFunds Goth 50000

Needs, Mood & Aspiration (6)

  • Fill every need bar for the Sims on the lot

Servo robots' power and PlantSim motives are not affected, and the Sims Wiki points out it is a poor fit for a restaurant you run because customers get filled up too. Needs The Sims 2: Nightlife or a later expansion.

    PC
    maxMotives
  • Freeze need decay for the Sims on the lot

Type motiveDecay on to restore normal decay. The Sims Wiki says this also freezes the room (environment) need, so use it when that bar is green. Needs The Sims 2: Nightlife or a later expansion.

    PC
    motiveDecay off
  • Set the selected Sim's aspiration level

Takes 0 to 5: 0 drops the Sim into failure and 5 reaches platinum. It does not change the reward points you can spend. Needs The Sims 2: Nightlife or a later expansion.

    PC
    aspirationLevel 5
  • Give the selected Sim aspiration reward points

Replace 5000 with the amount you want. The points are spent on aspiration reward objects and the aspiration meter does not move. Needs The Sims 2: Nightlife or a later expansion.

    PC
    aspirationPoints 5000
  • Freeze the aspiration meter for the Sims on the lot

Stops the meter from rising or decaying. Type lockAspiration off to undo it. Needs The Sims 2: Nightlife or a later expansion.

    PC
    lockAspiration on
  • Unlock every career reward object for the selected Sim

Select the Sim first, because it only applies to the currently selected Sim. Needs The Sims 2: Nightlife or a later expansion.

    PC
    unlockCareerRewards

Aging, Family & Pets (13)

  • Stop the Sims on the lot from aging

Type aging on to start aging again. PC Gamer says to re-enter it each time you switch households, and SimsWiki.info says it also pauses any pregnancy in progress. Works in the base game.

    PC
    aging off
  • Stop puppies and kittens from aging

Use false to let them age again. It does not work on adult animals; use aging off for those. EA's Legacy Collection page lists this cheat as disablePuppyKittenAging on/off without the boolProp prefix. Needs The Sims 2: Pets.

    PC
    boolProp disablePuppyKittenAging true
  • Turn a pregnancy into twins

Select the pregnant Sim before you enter it. Needs The Sims 2: Open for Business or a later expansion.

    PC
    forceTwins
  • Add a Set Age option for Sims

Click a Sim (PC Gamer and GameSpot say Shift+click) and choose Set Age to move them to another life stage, including backwards. The option also shows up on objects but does nothing there. Type ageSimsCheat off to remove it. Needs The Sims 2: Nightlife or a later expansion.

    PC
    ageSimsCheat on
  • Add townies and visitors to your household

Adds an add-to-family choice for non-playable Sims. GamesRadar and TheGamer say it does not work on special NPCs such as the Grim Reaper, and the Sims Wiki warns that adding certain NPCs to a household can corrupt the game, so stick to ordinary townies. Needs The Sims 2: Open for Business or a later expansion.

    PC
    addNeighborToFamilyCheat on
  • Take direct control of pets

SimsWiki.info says it also covers apartment roommates and vacation companions, and TheGamer says it can be glitchy. Use false to turn it off. Needs The Sims 2: Pets.

    PC
    boolProp controlPets true
  • Give pets free will

TheGamer warns that pets become unpredictable. Use false to turn it off. Needs The Sims 2: Pets.

    PC
    boolProp petsFreeWill true
  • Cancel actions queued on a pet

Lets you cancel interactions queued on a pet; SimsWiki.info says it also works for apartment roommates and vacation companions. Use false to turn it off. Needs The Sims 2: Pets.

    PC
    boolProp petActionCancel true
  • Keep bug-jar fireflies and butterflies alive forever

Type bugJarTimeDecay on to bring back the normal time limit. Needs The Sims 2: Seasons.

    PC
    bugJarTimeDecay off
  • Allow more guests at a party

Replace 8 with your own limit. SimsWiki.info says to enter it on the neighborhood screen or re-enter the lot before inviting, and the Sims Wiki warns that more Sims on a lot means more lag. Works in the base game.

    PC
    intProp maxNumOfVisitingSims 8
  • Change the time of day

Takes 0 to 23 on a 24-hour clock, so setHour 13 is 1 PM. Needs The Sims 2: Open for Business or a later expansion.

    PC
    setHour 18
  • Make the selected Sim taller or shorter

1.0 is normal height. The change is not saved and resets when you reload the lot. SimsWiki.info says large values make animations look wrong and that pets show visible glitches.

    PC
    stretchSkeleton 1.3
  • Remove the face-blending limits in Create a Sim

Switches off the limits the game uses when it blends two parents' faces and when you edit faces in Create a Sim. Type faceBlendLimits on to restore them.

    PC
    faceBlendLimits off

Testing Cheats & Debug Menu (4)

  • Turn on the testing cheats (hidden debug menu)

Afterwards, Shift+click a Sim, an object or the mailbox for hidden options such as Make Selectable, Set Birthday, Spawn (which includes the Tombstone of Life and Death) or filling everyone's needs from the mailbox. If you turn it on before loading a lot you can also drag need, skill and relationship bars with the mouse. Type false to turn it off. The Sims Wiki says the setting itself is safe to leave on, but some options can corrupt a game; TheGamer calls the menu buggy. Works in the base game.

    PC
    boolProp testingCheatsEnabled true
  • Unlock NPC-only clothes, skin tones and hair in Create a Sim

With testing cheats on, press Shift+N inside Create a Sim before you make your first Sim, and Shift+M to turn it off again.

    PC
    Shift + N
  • Instantly fulfill a want or fear

With testing cheats on, Ctrl+click the want or fear icon in the wants panel. You get the aspiration points even though the requirement itself was not met.

    PC
    Ctrl + click
  • Rent an apartment with its furniture

With testing cheats on, stand a Sim next to the apartment door with an empty action queue, Shift+click the door and choose Rent Furnished. Needs The Sims 2: Apartment Life.

    PC
    Shift + click apartment door

Build & Buy Mode (17)

  • Move or delete objects the game normally locks

Lets you pick up and delete fixed items such as the mailbox and trash can, move objects while Sims use them, delete Sims, and place items closer together than the grid allows. Type moveObjects off to restore the normal rules. The Sims Wiki says a deleted mailbox or trash can cannot be brought back, and SimsWiki.info lists the community phone among items whose deletion causes lot problems (see the warnings above before deleting anything). Works in the base game.

    PC
    moveObjects on
  • Place objects off the grid

Set it back to true before placing windows and doors, which may refuse to snap while it is off. The Sims Wiki warns that misuse can corrupt a lot so it cannot be opened from the neighborhood view. Works in the base game.

    PC
    boolProp snapObjectsToGrid false
  • Place objects in quarter-tile steps

After entering it, press Ctrl+F in Build or Buy mode to switch quarter-tile placement on and off. Some objects stop working when placed this way, so the Sims Wiki recommends it for decoration only. Needs The Sims 2: Mansion & Garden Stuff.

    PC
    setQuarterTilePlacement on
  • Rotate objects in 45 degree steps

Use the < and > keys while holding an object (a GameFAQs contributor lists the , and . keys). Sims may not be able to use appliances placed at an angle, so keep them decorative. Needs The Sims 2: University or a later expansion.

    PC
    boolProp allow45DegreeAngleOfRotation true
  • Change the elevation of floor tiles under walls, floors and foundations

Set it to true to restore the normal rule. Works in the base game.

    PC
    boolProp constrainFloorElevation false
  • Edit road, sidewalk and lot-edge tiles

Lets you place floor tiles on the very edge of the lot and change the tiles of the road and sidewalk. The Sims Wiki says moveObjects does the same thing. Works in the base game.

    PC
    boolProp lockTiles false
  • Raise the floor limit for building

Do not go above 16 floors or the game crashes. The Sims Wiki and SimsWiki.info say it works only sometimes in later expansions and not in the base game; both describe a dormer trick that adds one more level without the cheat. Needs The Sims 2: University or a later expansion.

    PC
    setHighestAllowedLevel 10
  • Set the slope of every roof on the lot

Takes 15 to 75 degrees. Needs The Sims 2: Nightlife or a later expansion.

    PC
    roofSlopeAngle 60
  • Set the slope of a single roof section

Takes 15 to 75. After entering it, hold Ctrl and Alt and click the roof section with the roof tool. The Sims Wiki and SimsWiki.info say the original Pets release did not save the change until the Pets patch. Needs The Sims 2: Pets or a later expansion.

    PC
    individualRoofSlopeAngle 60
  • Delete every wall on the lot

Build Mode only. EA says it removes all walls that can be deleted in Build Mode. Needs The Sims 2: Pets or a later expansion.

    PC

Build Mode only. Needs The Sims 2: Pets or a later expansion.

Build Mode only. Needs The Sims 2: Pets or a later expansion.

    PC
    deleteAllAwnings
  • Delete every door, window or staircase on the lot

Replace doors with windows or stairs to remove those instead. Always include the type: EA's list describes the bare deleteAllObjects command as removing all objects. Build Mode only. Needs The Sims 2: Pets or a later expansion.

    PC
    deleteAllObjects doors
  • Unlock build and buy tools on dorm lots

Also works on community lots, but the Sims Wiki and SimsWiki.info say changes made there are not saved. Use true to restore the restriction. Needs The Sims 2: University or a later expansion.

    PC
    boolProp dormSpecificToolsDisabled false
  • Unlock build and buy tools on an occupied apartment lot

SimsWiki.info says it takes effect after you switch between Buy and Build mode. Use true to restore the restriction. Needs The Sims 2: Apartment Life.

    PC
    boolProp aptSubLotSpecificToolsDisabled false
  • Unlock build and buy tools on an empty apartment lot

SimsWiki.info says it takes effect after you switch between Buy and Build mode. Use true to restore the restriction. Needs The Sims 2: Apartment Life.

    PC
    boolProp aptBaseLotSpecificToolsDisabled false

Neighborhood & Lots (16)

  • Change a lot's zoning type

Enter the lot, make sure no Sims live there, enter the cheat, then save, go back to the neighborhood and re-enter the lot. Zone names: residential and community; dorm, greek and secretsociety (University); hotel and secretvacationlot (Bon Voyage); secrethobbylot (FreeTime); apartmentbase (Apartment Life); EA also lists apartmentsublot and secretwitchlot. Secret vacation and secret hobby lots must be created the proper in-game way, otherwise the cheat does not work or can corrupt the game. Needs The Sims 2: University or a later expansion.

    PC
    changeLotZoning community
  • Turn the current lot into a dormitory

Same rules as the general zoning cheat: the lot must be empty of residents. Needs The Sims 2: University or a later expansion.

    PC
    changeLotZoning dorm
  • Set a lot's social class (which townies move into apartments)

Takes low, middle or high. The class stays until you clear it with clearLotClassValue. Needs The Sims 2: Apartment Life.

    PC
    changeLotClassification high
  • Clear a forced lot class

Resets the lot to its normally calculated class. Needs The Sims 2: Apartment Life.

    PC
    clearLotClassValue
  • Switch the neighborhood terrain to desert

Neighborhood view only, and you need to leave and re-enter the neighborhood to see the change. The base game accepts desert and temperate; dirt and concrete need Nightlife or later. SimsWiki.info reports that only desert reliably changes the whole neighborhood.

    PC
    terrainType desert

Neighborhood view only. Click an area (drag for a bigger one), then press [ to raise, ] to lower, \ to level or P to smooth. Type modifyNeighborhoodTerrain off when finished. Needs The Sims 2: FreeTime.

    PC

    PC
    showHeadlines off
  • Enable the post-processing effects

Required before bloom, vignette, filmGrain and letterBox do anything. It needs a video card with pixel shader support; if the screen goes partly dark, turn it off with false. SimsWiki.info says it lowers frame rate even with no effect active.

On Xbox, the L and R in older guides mean the triggers. The Sims Wiki and SuperCheats both say a code can fail on the first try.

Covers 85 PC and Mac commands and key presses that appear in at least two independent sources, plus 11 button codes each for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube versions. Not included: commands only one source lists (money, uintProp uiScaleFactor, dumpNPCCount, textDebugging, social_debug, intProp chanceOfTwins, intProp chanceOfPregnancy, deleteAllDoors, printLotClass); commands that need the game started in debug mode (loadLot, changeNeighborhoodType); obsolete ones (autoPatch, intProp censorGridSize); apartmentBuildBuyRestrictions, whose syntax differs between sources; and minor graphics and lighting toggles (boolProp useShaders, bumpMapping, nhoodWaterReflection, reflectionWithExtraViewer, floatProp particleDensity, setLotLightingFile), which SimsWiki.info lists in full. The Shift+click debug menu has many more options than the ones named here. The PSP, DS and GBA versions and the console games The Sims 2: Pets and The Sims 2: Castaway are separate games with different codes and are not covered.

FAQ

How do you open the cheat box in The Sims 2?

On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+C while playing, type a command and press Enter. On a Mac the Sims Wiki, Simlogical and Destructoid give Command+Shift+C. Esc or the exit command closes the box. If Windows swallows the shortcut, the Sims Wiki says to add the Windows key. The 2005 PS2, Xbox and GameCube versions have no text box and use button codes that summon a Cheat Gnome.

What are the money cheats in The Sims 2?

kaching adds 1,000 Simoleons and motherlode adds 50,000, and both can be repeated. familyFunds followed by a family name and an amount sets that family's money, or put a plus or minus sign before the amount to add or subtract; it needs Nightlife or a later expansion. The Sims Wiki says a household's funds top out at 9,999,999. On PS2, Xbox and GameCube the Cheat Gnome gives 9,999 Simoleons per use.

How do you stop Sims from aging in The Sims 2?

Type aging off to stop the Sims on the lot from aging, and aging on to start again. PC Gamer says to enter it again after switching households, and SimsWiki.info says it also pauses pregnancies in progress. Puppies and kittens need boolProp disablePuppyKittenAging true and The Sims 2: Pets.

What does boolProp testingCheatsEnabled true do?

It unlocks the debug menu: Shift+click Sims, objects and the mailbox for hidden options, drag need and skill bars if you turn it on before loading a lot, and press Shift+N in Create a Sim for NPC-only clothes and skin tones. The Sims Wiki says leaving it on does not corrupt saves; the risk is in options such as making special NPCs playable, and TheGamer says a misclick can kill a Sim, so keep a backup.

Is the moveObjects cheat safe to use?

It is fine for decorating, but it removes protections. You can delete the mailbox and trash can, which the Sims Wiki says cannot be bought back, and you can delete Sims. The Sims Wiki says a deleted Sim returns at the mailbox when the lot reloads, while PC Gamer says it removes the Sim from the family, so avoid deleting Sims. Type moveObjects off when you are done.

Do cheats work on the PS2, Xbox and GameCube versions of The Sims 2?

Yes, but they are button codes. Enter the Cheat Gnome code first (PS2: L1, R1, Up, X, R2; Xbox: LT, RT, Up, A, Black; GameCube: L, R, Up, A, Z), then select the plumb bob post that appears on the lot and use the codes for money, time, skills and unlocks. Several sources say a code can take more than one try.
